B1/B2 Visa - Request for more information from US consulate

My in-laws attended a visa interview under the B1/B2 category at the US Visa Consulate in Hyderabad. A few days later, we received an email requesting my mother-in-law to submit a copy of her old passport. We responded by providing the old passport copy. (She attended a visa interview in 2018 with the old passport, and the visa was denied.)

Today, we received another email from the consulate mentioning that the date of birth in the old and new passports is different. Upon reviewing the documents, we realized that there is an error in the date of birth in the new passport, which we had not noticed earlier.

Can we respond to the US consulate’s email, explaining that we only realized the discrepancy today after receiving their email, and that we will work on correcting the error?

What are our options in this situation? Will the passport be returned so that we can obtain a corrected passport and resubmit it?

You can respond with the explanation.

But, most probably, they will ask for a renewed passport with correct date of birth before they stamp the visa.
