Do I need to just file the h1b extension with i140 and in pending status waiting for approval or need to get it approved to stay on after my 6 years of h1b completion??

I m still concerned ,just filing is enough in my case to continue the stay in US until it gets approved (approval can come after my h1 period and is it fine to stay) or I need the case to be approved before my 6 years h1b period ends ( I don’t have any other days to cover). Please let me know how it works in this scenario.
