Sponsoring cousin to get admission under NRI category in India

My cousin who is in India (12th grade) wants to show me as sponsor so he can get admission under NRI quota in Maharashtra Engg college.
I have checked and sponsoring a cousin is allowed but was thinking should I do it? I mean on one hand I want to help out but other hand since I am sending my US tax returns, SSN, visa, DL etc. was wondering if this will put my visa status etc. under problem here in US with new administration? Will I have to show the person as a ‘dependent’ while filing taxes as I am not married and file as single?

Usually, you just need to send a NRI status letter attested by Indian embassy.

You don’t actually send your SSN, bank details to Indian college but only to Indian embassy.

And a separate letter where you write that you are ready to sponsor him.

I myself did it for one of my relative and have not seen any issue.

Which state was this relative of yours cause in Maharashtra college gave this list of documents. My concern is will this lead to any inquiry with USCIS/US embassy in India to verify my H1B status etc… any clue ?

Did you have to show them as a dependent for taxes in USA ?
