Visa cancelled notification from US Consulate

Hi,

Requesting your advice. I have been hearing that some people are receiving notifications stating their valid stamped visa is cancelled. I have H1b visa valid till April 2026. I am planning to travel out of USA next week and return in Jan 2026. I do not have any DUI, arrest or any other case with law enforcement. Is there a chance of my visa getting cancelled while I am out of USA. Is there any particular pattern/criteria for visa being cancelled, also please let me know if there is any proactive way to check my visa status before my travel.

Looking forward for your advice,

Thanks, Pronab Das

At this time, you should be able to travel.

But, the fact is that rules change so quickly that there is no practical way to adjust than to avoid travel completely.

They are usually canceling existing visas for people who had any interaction with law enforcement (we can’t guess what), but most common is driving ticket of any sort. So, if you never had any driving ticket, you are safe for now.

But, nobody can tell if they will change rules next week or not.

So, travel is always a risk and you may not be able to sleep peacefully while you are out of US.

You are the best one yourself to judge your situation and then take a call on whether to travel or cancel.

Hi Amit,

Thank you for your input. I have couple of follow-up questions.

  1. I have parking ticket in the past in NY state, I got the ticket in mail and paid the fine. Is the cancellation happening for any kind of traffic tickets or for folks who had arrest record and/or fingerprinted by law enforcement.
  2. Is there a proactive way to check visa status before travelling?

Looking forward for your advice.

Thanks,Pronab Das

They have cancelled visa for any type of ticket irrespective of how serious it was.

I am not aware of any way to check visa’s status.

It is considered valid on the face of it. The only caveat is when you receive an official email of cancellation, it is cancelled on their systems and you can’t use it.
