Just ID proof like passport copy and also a passport sized photo (both for the applicant).
Did they ask to pay any fees ?
I got my passport renewed at NY in 30 days with normal processing:
- Day 1 - Mailed the documents via Fedex
- Day 2 - Package delivered according to Fedex tracking status
- Day 11 - Email from VFS with tracking number for application status (until receiving this email I wasnât able to track status on VFS site, possibly because it was not in their system yet). Status: under processing
- Day 12 - Email from VFS saying âapplication has been processed and is forwarded to the embassy for decision makingâ.
- Day 18 - Email from VFS saying police verification process initiated, giving details of the police station. Tracking on embassy website shows âpassport has been printedâ.
- Day 26 - One email from VFS saying that the embassy review is complete, and another saying they have dispatched the passport via courier. Tracking on embassy and VFS websites reflect this, but Fedex status not updated. Police verification not yet completed at home.
- Day 28 - Tracking available on Fedex website. Details show that Fedex received the package on the previous day. Note: I used the tracking number on the return label, and until day 27 Fedex had only showed âshipping label createdâ as status for that tracking number. From day 28, there was an additional tracking with the same number (âduplicate resultsâ), with origin as NY but no recipient location printed, and with a new ship date (the old tracking showed the date of finishing online application as the ship date). This got me really worried, but in reality, didnât cause any issues with shipping.
- Day 29 - India: A police officer called the mobile number associated with the Indian address (I had given both home landline number and my motherâs mobile number), informing that they will visit the next day. They said they will be needing a copy of the current passport and a photo-id with the Indian address. They asked for aadhar, but as I donât have aadhar, they accepted a copy of my voterâs ID. USA: Fedex status still showed item in possession at Fedex NY (and not shipped).
- Day 30 - India: Police verification completed at home. They did not visit my home, but asked to send the passport copy and photo ID by WhatsApp. USA: Fedex status updated to âin transitâ, received passport on the same day (just to be clear, I donât think police verification completion is related to the Fedex shipping update). Fedex people left the package outside my door (inside an apartment complex) and did not ask for signature.
Services used: Address change (both old and new addresses are in India). Also used appearance & signature change because those on existing passport are from nine years ago. Previous passport was issued in India.
Iâm really grateful to am22 for the guidelines which helped me a lot while preparing the application. This forum also helped me keep calm while waiting for updates from VFS. Thank you so much!

Regarding copies of current passport and photo ID for police verification, is it acceptable just to show the scanned copies of these documents or do we need to print them out and hand it over to the police if they visit onsite?
No email or SMS was sent post completion
Sorry, I donât know whether theyâd have asked for print copies or not because in my case the police did not visit and only asked for e-copies of the scanned documents to be sent to them. My parents did have the print copies ready because the police had called in advance informing which documents they will need to see. But as the police did not visit, the printouts werenât needed.

Hello, anyone here who received their Passport from NYC consulate noticed any issues with the photo printed on their identity page? I recently received my Passport and the photo printed is really dark and the eyes are not visible at all. I am not sure how this was even quality checked?

You can ask them to reissue the passport if anything is wrong with the picture.
But, since it is an Indian service provider, they may not agree to it and they also charge for giving answers to questions as well.
Okay, but do you think itâs acceptable to travel with this passport? I mean after all the government quality checked and issued it!
Below is my timeline for NY ICAC
Application - Normal
11/07 - Fedex package sent
11/09 - Received by VFS
11/09 - Email confirmation of receipt from VFS
11/11 - Dispatched to embassy email from VFS
11/11 - Passport application along with fee details have been received. The same is under processing at the Embassy/Consulate
12/21 - Print has been initiated
12/22 - Passport is printed and will be delivered shortly.
12/22 - Parents received a call in hometown to submit docs for Police Verification
12/22 - Passport has been handed over by the Embassy/Consulate to the OSP executive for further dispatch to the applicant.
12/28 - Received my passport

they asked me Aadhar and India address proof(I have given India DL) and 2 photos.
